Legendary Bob Newhart one of TVs most enduring stars with shows stretching back more than five decades wept when he finally captured his first Emmy Award

Veteran actor Bob Newhart has won his first Emmy for his guest role in The Big Bang Theory

The 84-year-old wept as he was honoured at the creative arts Emmy. Newhart 84 was honored at Sundays creative arts Emmy ceremony for his guest role last season on The Big Bang Theory as Professor Proton a down-on-his luck scientist who was the childhood hero of the shows main characters

Newhart dedicated the award to his late wife Ginny. He recalled their first date in 1949 and said she had been with him every step of the way in his career

The actor also thanked Chuck Lorre the creator of The Big Bang Theory for bringing him back as Professor Proton for a second time.

Newhart has been nominated for an Emmy eight times before but has never won. His win for The Big Bang Theory marks a long-overdue recognition for one of the most beloved actors in television history.
