July 12, 2023
Numerous severe thunderstorms brought tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds to several states across the country on Wednesday, causing significant damage and leaving thousands without power.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storms impacted a wide swath of the Great Plains, including Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas. The NWS reported multiple tornado touchdowns, including one that caused extensive damage in Harrison County, Iowa. The tornado left several homes and businesses destroyed, and power outages were widespread.
In addition to tornadoes, the storms also produced damaging winds and large hail. Winds gusting up to 70 mph were recorded in some areas, causing downed trees and power lines. Hailstones as large as golf balls were reported, damaging crops and vehicles.
Utility crews are working to restore power to the affected areas, but thousands of residents remained without electricity as of Friday morning. The NWS continues to monitor the situation and warns that additional severe weather is possible in the coming days.
